A primary focus of academic advising is to help you look ahead to your continued academic progress in your major by providing an individual academic plan for your first year. As the spring 2004 semester registration period approaches, you are strongly encouraged to seek advisement before registration begins. Listed below are several ways to meet with an academic advisor at First Year Advising and Exploration:
- Scheduled Appointment: If you have several questions/concerns regarding your major, are thinking about changing your major, or are having any non-academic concerns you should consider scheduling an appointment. Appointments are scheduled in half hour time blocks. Generally an advisor will review your degree audit and the UCF catalog, go over important policies and procedures, assist with course selection, and will discuss appropriate referrals to various campus resources. You should be prepared with questions, and should have a general idea of courses you would like to take for the spring semester. Appointments are usually scheduled with your assigned academic advisor.
- Small Group Advising: Generally a group will consist of 8-10 students and will last approximately 1-1 ½ hours, however you are free to leave once all your questions have been answered. Advisors conduct small group sessions in order to answer frequently asked questions, review degree audits, and assist with course selection. Some small group sessions cover specific topics such as career exploration for undeclared students, or transient information for students wanting to take courses at another institution. Small group advising sessions are scheduled with your assigned academic advisor.
